2021 Malbec
TASTING NOTE
Captivating aromas of crushed raspberries, dusty blueberries, blackberries, and cassis and a floral, violet note. The velvety tannins and hints of nutmeg, sagebrush, and white pepper add depth and complexity.
REVIEWS & AWARDS
93 Points - John Schreiner "The wine has the classic perfumed aromas of the varietal: violets mingled with raspberry and blueberry and accented with an intriguing hint of pepper. The pepper carries through to the palate to lift the flavours of cherry, blueberry and spice."

Media for past vintages:
2019 Malbec - DJ Kearney "Every time I taste Painted Rock's Malbec I am reminded of how sensational this grape can be in the Okanagan. There is a peppery character that sets this malbec apart, along with heady florality, wild blueberry fruit flavours and a spicy lacquer of oak. Both muscular and fresh, the 2019 vintage conditions have added a savoury elegance that is extremely attractive. Very low yields add extra potency and ageability."
2016 Malbec - Anthony Gismondi "This is a blockbuster malbec that presents awash in black fruit and spice. The dry, desert Skaha environment may not be Andean but the proximity of the lake and cool nights have stoked its florals and acidty to keep it on point. Another level above the C.C. Jentsch and the Hillside, this tells an impressive Okanagan tale. Big, boisterous and ready to go, this must be tamed with a grilled piece of lamb or another decade in the cellar."
WINEMAKING
Our estate has just 1.15 acres of Malbec planted, with this vintage being the first year that the 0.15 acre road that was planted in 2019 produced fruit. Most of our Malbec is used to create our Red Icon blend but small lots can only be made in select vintages. In 2021, our Malbec was harvested on October 21. The wine was aged in 30% new oak for 18 months. Unfiltered.

2021 VINTAGE REVIEW
It was a hot summer that was punctuated by a heat dome which settled on the Okanagan Valley from the end of June through early July. The combination of high heat and low rainfall contributed to another year of lower than anticipated yield but excellent quality fruit. Despite the heat during the days, we benefited from our usual cooler evening temperatures which kept the acidity bright and the resulting wines incredibly balanced.
